Alice Paden Green left an outsized mark in Albany and New York, but her story began as an unassuming little girl, uprooted from her southern home to the tiny town of Minerva in the Adirondacks. Her memoir, Outsider, tells the good and bad of her childhood, from racism to alcoholism, friendship to love. But the main takeaway as we remember her legacy, is that big things can come from the most humble of beginnings.

The Long Lake Association (LLA) is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving Long Lake's natural beauty and history. Founded in the early 1990s, LLA continues a legacy of local conservation efforts dating back to the 1930s. The association's current focus includes water quality improvement, preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species, and fostering community involvement through various programs.
