Mycorrhizal fungi play a vital role in forests of all shapes and sizes, and while they may not be seen, the importance of their ecological role cannot be overstated. In the second installment of guest blogs about forestry, Claudia Bashian-Victoroff details studies in the Cleveland area following the importance of fungi in urban forestry.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s FY2023/24 budget proposal today included significant funding and policy proposals for municipal clean water and wastewater projects, environmental jobs training, an Environmental Protection Fund of $400 million, and “Cap and Invest” program expected to generate $1 billion for programs to fight climate change, the Adirondack Council said.

Forests in the Northeast are complex systems and finite resources. Given the recent passage of New York’s final Climate Plan, the State seeks to leverage and grow these existing forest ecosystems in the climate crisis and draw heavily on these limited resources. A coalition of 10 conservation and educational organizations has sent a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul urging her upcoming State of the State message and Executive Budget proposal to advance bold investments and strengthened policies to improve the protection and management of the Adirondack Park.

Even before the science of conservation biology matured, the Adirondack Council bravely went on record supporting the return of wolves and cougars to Adirondack Park. Conservation biology has since confirmed the great ecological importance of top carnivores, and the need of these wide-ranging animals for big interconnected core reserves

Leaders of Adirondack environmental organizations joined with local elected officials here today to urge Gov. Kathy Hochul not to mothball the former Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility as is planned by Dec. 31, but instead to reuse it to bolster conservation and boost employment. The leaders said there were several possible options that would bring new life to the structure. Reuse would help a small Adirondack community recover from the job losses and lost business opportunities associated with the closure of a state institution

The Adirondack Council today said it supports the Champlain-Hudson Power Express (CHPE) renewable energy project as a part of New York State’s efforts to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, obtain more renewable energy, and combat the climate justice crisis under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
